InnoTrans opening: focus on the right topics
InnoTrans 2024 was officially opened on Tuesday morning. With its focus on electrification, digitalisation, automation and sustainability, ‘InnoTrans is setting exactly the right priorities,’ Dirk Hoffmann, COO of Messe Berlin GmbH, said referring to the major trends and topics of the day. Volker Wissing, Germany’s Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Affairs, used his welcoming address to reaffirm the German government's support for the digitalisation of the rail network: ‘We are committed to this, even if people occasionally try to give a different impression, and are working flat out to equip our rail network and vehicles with ETCS as quickly as possible.’ This is necessary in order to meet the demands that society places on the railway. Magda Kopczyńska, Director General of DB Move at the EU Commission, who had been announced as a speaker, was unable to attend at short notice. Wissing also addressed the European dimension of rail transport. He said that standardised, digital solutions throughout Europe, such as ERTMS or the digital automatic coupling, were necessary in order to strengthen competitiveness compared to road transport. The latter also requires extensive financial support from the EU.
Panels at the InnoTrans opening discussed the opportunities of AI
The opening ceremony of InnoTrans was all about artificial intelligence (AI) and the opportunities it offers for railway operators and the rail industry. Two panel discussions highlighted the opportunities and framework conditions for its successful use. Mohamed Rabie Khlie, Director General of the Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF), said that AI will play a decisive role for the high-speed network and the Tangier - Marrakesh route planned for 2030, including for ticketing and optimising the capacity utilisation of trains, as well as for optimising operations. According to Richard Lutz, Chairman of the Board & CEO of Deutsche Bahn AG, there are basically unlimited possible applications for AI. It is already being used to inspect trains or check vegetation along the track, for example. It is important to ensure that data security is guaranteed. Susanne Henckel, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs, pointed out that AI also enables new business models. The sharing of data also plays a role here. Henri Poupart-Lafarge, CEO of Alstom, said that science also needs suitable access to individual data in order to be able to research improvements. At the same time, it must be possible to safeguard the interests of companies. Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility GmbH, and Javier Martínez Ojinaga, CEO of CAF Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A., also emphasised that AI is changing business models.

A must for foreign delegations
‘It's not only important for me, but also for our members to be here. There are no comparable trade fairs in the USA with so many suppliers and service providers. By visiting InnoTrans, they see all the opportunities in the rail industry,’ said Kellyanne Gallagher, CEO Commuter Rail Coalition, USA.
Colombia, Taiwan, Canada, Morocco, Chile, India, South Korea, representatives of the Road and Transport Authority RTA Dubai - a total of 37 foreign delegations are travelling to Berlin to find out about the latest developments in transport technology at InnoTrans. Spanish Transport Minister Oskar Puente is particularly interested in hydrogen- and battery-powered trains. Spain, which is one of the leading countries in terms of high-speed networks, needs trains to offer transportation for people in small towns and places where there is still no electric rail network. The Brazilian delegation at InnoTrans consists of 115 people. ‘The significant presence of our country at this trade fair is a sign of the great potential of the Brazilian railway sector and demonstrates the strength and potential of bilateral relations with Germany,’ said the Brazilian Ambassador to Germany, Roberto Jaguaribe.
Women in Mobility Luncheon with its own venue for the first time
The visibility of women in the mobility world has increased significantly. This is also due to Women in Mobility (WiM), an association for networking, joint projects, cooperation and exchange for women from the mobility industry - across all hierarchical levels. WiM Luncheon brought together around 400 women from Australia, South Africa, the USA, various European countries and, of course, Germany at the palais.Berlin. This was the first time that WiM had its own venue. After keynote speeches by Paloma Iribas Forcat, Chair of the Management Board and the Chair of the Executive Board of the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA), Helen Bradley, Chief Human Resources Officer, Alstom, and Rajani Boddu, Vice President Engineering, Wabtec Corporation, among others, the participants took the opportunity to engage in intensive dialogue.

Stadler: a firework display of vehicles
No other manufacturer has brought as many vehicles to InnoTrans as Stadler Rail AG - no fewer than eight. The portfolio ranges from trams and narrow-gauge ‘tailor-made’ solutions to a heavy locomotive with a bimodal drive. The centrepiece, however, is the rather inconspicuous RS Zero, a successor to the widely used RS1 branch line vehicle. The rather small four-axle vehicle is preconfigured and will only be supplied with a locally emission-free drive. Following approval, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Thuringia intends to use the prototype as part of a pilot project together with the Erfurt railway company. The Class 99 for the UK market will also be on show for the first time. It can be powered both by overhead line and by diesel engine. Customised solutions are one of Stadler's specialities. One such speciality is the vehicle for the narrow-gauge Centovalli railway. The two operators of the line, the Swiss FART and the Italian SSIF, have ordered eight and four units respectively in two length variants.

Hospitality Forum: ‘Train Catering - Designing the future’
The Hospitality Forum, organised by the International Rail Catering Group (IRCG), is taking place today, Wednesday. From 14.00 to 16.00 in the CityCube Level 3 | M Rooms | M6, the focus will be on the future of train catering in conjunction with technical innovations from rail vehicle manufacturers. Questions such as: ‘Does catering and catering for guests on board trains have a future?’, ‘How does the topic of catering for passengers influence the design of rail vehicles?’, ‘What should catering companies consider when designing their product range?’ will be discussed.
The forum will start with a 45-minute panel discussion, followed by questions and answers. The forum will conclude with a presentation entitled ‘Influence of European legislation on developments in the catering sector on long-distance trains’. The following speakers have been announced: Kurt Bauer (ÖBB), Christian Diewald (Stadler Austria GmbH), Christian Hölbl (IRCG), Jörg Oswald (SBB) and Philip Nicolas Schaaf (DB Fernverkehr AG).
Optimisation solutions for public transport and the rail system
During the AI tour on Tuesday, Enterprise Bot GmbH showed how speech recognition using artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in customer service and call centres, for example to respond quickly to spoken or written enquiries in the event of disruptions. Both IVU Traffic Technologies AG and the Cosmo Consult Group address the problem of bus drivers who do not speak the local language. Both offer translation solutions. T-Systems International GmbH uses cameras on locomotives to improve operations and safety with the help of the data obtained. They work with the Flatland Association, an open source initiative that uses AI to develop optimisation algorithms. Ostakon GmbH is using blockchain technology to establish a data space for secure data exchange between equals, which also makes it possible to monetise data usage via smart contracts. AI methods such as pattern recognition and machine learning (ML) can accelerate and improve optimisation processes, for example in intelligent transport systems (ITS). Giro uses ML with the Hastus application to optimise the buffers for timetable and fleet that are necessary for 100 per cent reliability with the lowest possible use of resources. Galgus Global uses this technology for passenger access to WLAN and the performance of a network of interacting WLAN access points. AI Mobility Lab (Hall 7.1a, including lecture podium). AI tours only with registration (in the Marschall-Haus, remaining places).

Mirko Ross on AI, security and trust in mobility
‘Secure AI systems strengthen trust in the applications supported by AI. Trust is a priceless asset, especially in mobility, and one that is particularly worth protecting,’ emphasises AI security expert Mirko Ross, CEO and Founder of asvin GmbH.
‘Fooling AI - Why security matters in AI development’ was the topic of his opening presentation in the AI Mobility Corner yesterday. The cybersecurity expert focussed on the cybersecurity vulnerabilities of AI systems. The spectrum ranges from the infiltration of harmful information during training and image analysis to the hacking of AI-based chat systems using prompt-leaking attacks, he explained with examples. The aim must be to consider and implement ‘security by design’ right from the start of an AI project in order to prevent cyberattacks on AI systems and protect users of AI systems.

New trams for urban mobility
This year's InnoTrans once again offers a broad overview of the latest developments in the tram segment. The new low-floor tram from Alstom for the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), which stands out above all due to its sheer length of 50 metres, is playing a home game. The 30 metre long ForCity Smart from the Škoda Group (pictured), a construction with two bogies under each of the two end cars and a floating middle section, is rolling into Bonn. Stadtwerke Bonn has ordered a total of 28 of these vehicles to replace 30-year-old trams. The Twist from PESA Bydgoszcz SA, which is being delivered to Wrocław in Poland, stands out with its striking head shape. The three-car unit has three bogies, one on each part of the carriage. The VDV TramTrain from Stadler Rail AG, which can run on both railway and tram tracks, marks the transition to the mainline railway. The vehicle on display is intended for the Saarbahn in Saarbrücken - the first of a total of 246 trams ordered for various regions.

Premiere for a battery-powered shunting locomotive
One of the surprises at InnoTrans is certainly the three-axle shunting locomotive with a pure battery drive. Three partners were involved in its realisation: the leasing company Nexrail Lease from Luxembourg, the manufacturer IPE Railway Vehicles from the Verona region and the railway company Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (hvle). The former provided the financing, IPE carried out the engineering and construction and hvle helped develop the idea and intends to use the prototype. The e6 locomotive has three 250 kW traction motors and a battery with a capacity of up to 1 megawatt hour. The special feature is that the technology for charging the battery is not located on the locomotive itself, but at the charging station. The e6 also has a pantograph like an e-bus. The partners expect the locomotive to be capable of eight hours of ‘heavy’ shunting operation.
