High-ranking transport politicians open InnoTrans
At the InnoTrans opening event, Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Affairs, Germany, and Magda Kopczyńska, Director General of DG MOVE of the European Commission, will give the welcoming speeches and present the political perspectives on rail transport from Berlin and Brussels. Up to 1,000 guests are expected to attend the official opening of the trade fair at palais.Berlin from 10:00 a.m. Dirk Hoffmann, COO of Messe Berlin GmbH, will also speak as host. The technical part of the opening event will focus on the future topic of artificial intelligence (AI). Under the motto ‘From Hype to Reality - AI in the mobility sector’, Susanne Henckel (State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs, Germany), Richard Lutz (CEO of Deutsche Bahn AG), Mohamed Rabie Khlie (Director General of the Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF)) and Henri Poupart-Lafarge (CEO of Alstom S. A.) as well as Michael Peter (CEO of Siemens Mobility GmbH) and Javier Martínez Ojinaga (CEO of CAF Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A.) will be discussing.
‘This is the time to roll up our sleeves’
At the trade fair's Innovation Press Circle on the day before InnoTrans, top representatives of the rail sector emphasised its social importance and innovative strength - but also warned against resting on one's laurels. ‘This is the time to roll up our sleeves,’ said Enno Wiebe, Director General of UNIFE. ‘The competition never sleeps’, said Martin Schmitz, Managing Director Technology of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV). At the recent International Motor Show (IAA), numerous developments such as new electric lorries were on display. The rail sector must therefore continue to develop rapidly. InnoTrans traditionally organises the Innovation Press Circle shortly before the start of the trade fair. It gives journalists the opportunity to talk to leading representatives of the rail sector. Keynote speeches were given by Sarah Stark, Managing Director of the German Railway Industry Association (VDB), Azar Mottele, Director Mobility Division of the German Electrical and Digital Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) and Heike van Hoorn, Managing Director of the German Transport Forum (DVF), among others. Afterwards, journalists were able to take part in a guided tour of the InnoTrans outdoor exhibition area. On the 3,500 running metres of track on the outdoor display, 133 vehicles will be on display this year, including the new tram for Berlin from Alstom, the prototype of the RS Zero from Stadler Rail AG, the successor to the company's Regio Shuttle, and the new Modula BFC hydrogen locomotive from Vossloh Rolling Stock GmbH, a platform-based vehicle that can be converted to battery operation, among other things.

Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Affairs Wissing thanks railway industry and employees
At the InnoTrans pre-event reception organised by the German Railway Industry Association (VDB), German Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Affairs Volker Wissing expressly thanked the companies in the rail industry and their employees for their commitment. The upcoming challenges in the modernisation of rail transport are only conceivable as a team effort, he said. InnoTrans was a 'firework display of innovations' and showed what was possible.
Regarding to the situation in Germany, Wissing emphasised that Deutsche Bahn has all the financial resources they need for the renovation of highly frequented main lines over the next three years. The digitalisation of the rail network will not be delayed either: 'There is no change in strategy.' He reiterated his proposal for an infrastructure fund, the organisation of which would still require political debate - for example, on the question of whether it should also include private capital.
VDB Young Talent Award ‘Clean Mobility Award’ presented
Three students were honoured for their solutions for the mobility of the future at the traditional pre-InnoTrans event reception held by the German Railway Industry Association (VDB): Bianca Roßberg from TU Dresden has analysed the installation space for retrofitting ETCS components on rail service vehicles, two-way vehicles and historic vehicles as well as locomotives.
Markus Tesar from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has utilised the potential of artificial intelligence (AI): He has used AI to develop driving profiles for trams in Karlsruhe which, depending on the variable driving time reserve for the day, provide drivers with driving guidelines for an energy-efficient and punctual driving style.
Tom Horn's solution is also worthy of an award: he breathes a second life into locomotives’ traction batteries. The NORDAKADEMIE Elmshorn student has developed a flexible second-life concept.

Train2InnoTrans brought the EU rail sector to Berlin in an environmentally friendly way
The players in Brussels' rail policy travelled to InnoTrans in Berlin together, in an environmentally friendly and comfortable way. The Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking (Europe's Rail) had organised Train2InnoTrans with the support of European railway associations and companies. Representatives of the European Commission, the European Railway Agency (ERA), the Belgian government, European rail associations, railways and rail industry companies and the media travelled together from Bruxelles-Midi station to Berlin Hauptbahnhof. During the journey, there was the opportunity to follow discussions on topics such as innovation and passenger acquisition. Before departing Brussels, the DB Fernverkehr AG ICE 3neo used as Train2InnoTrans was christened Europa in Brussels. He was looking forward to the ‘capital of the railway’ that Berlin would be in the coming InnoTrans days, said Belgium's Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet in his speech after the arrival. More trains are needed to connect the people of Europe, said Gilkinet.
Exhibition area this year larger than ever
The 14th InnoTrans is back to its former greatness. The trade fair has recovered from the ‘corona dip’ in 2022 with 2,834 exhibitors from 56 countries and 137,394 guests from 131 countries. This year, more than 2,940 exhibitors from 59 countries will be showcasing their latest innovations and they have really gone the extra mile to present 226 world premieres exclusively to trade fair visitors across all segments. More than 133 vehicles on 3,500 running metres of track and 11 buses in the bus display await visitors on the outdoor display. By way of comparison, 3,062 exhibitors from 61 countries came to InnoTrans in 2018, bringing 155 vehicles and 155 world premieres with them. A lot has happened on the exhibition grounds and the 14th InnoTrans is bigger than ever with an exhibition area of 200,000 square metres. This year's InnoTrans supporting programme is once again inspiring and top-class.
The InnoTrans Convention offers expert talks, lectures and panel discussions with international guests. A new feature is the AI Mobility Lab, a specialised exhibition area as an extension of the Public Transport segment (Hall 7.1a). The lab covers the topics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, data protection and cybersecurity, supplemented by the AI Mobility Corner. Here will be presentations and discussion rounds lasting up to 60 minutes.

New mobility concepts in the InnoTrans Mobility+ segment
The trends in the Mobility+ trade fair segment at InnoTrans (Hall 7.1c), which has grown to 34 exhibitors this year, include more and more providers of platform-based on-demand, sharing or intermodal mobility concepts. Among the exhibitors is goFLUX Mobility GmbH, whose product can be summarised as a ‘ride-sharing app’. ‘With goFLUX, we are integrating carpooling into public transport as part of the Deutschlandticket for the first time’, goFLUX founder Wolfram Uerlich told InnoTrans Daily. The provider Better Mobility GmbH, which is also represented, connects sharing, e-scooter or on-demand solutions and taxi services with public transport. AXON VIBE goes one step further, using mobility forecasting and location tracking to predict ‘what people will do next’: This could also be used to encourage behavioural changes, e.g. via fare incentives. Similarly, MOTIONTAG, another mobility behaviour analyst, relies on gamification, for example to motivate travellers to adopt environmentally friendly mobility. Vesputi from Leipzig, for example, offers the integration of public transport tickets into the services of third-party providers such as hotels (but not only). Finally, in terms of the breadth of its offering, the mobility giant Siemens Mobility GmbH, which is also represented in the Mobility+ trade fair segment this year - in addition to the regular trade fair Booth in Hall 27 and the outdoor area - is unlikely to be assigned to any one topic. Other exhibitors include Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund GmbH (RMV) with the KIRA autonomous shuttle, Via Technologies Europe BV, GoodMaps Inc, Optibus and intelliTicket, to name but a few.

Siemens Mobility presents new digital solutions for the railway system
Shortly before the official start of InnoTrans, Siemens Mobility presented Signaling X. The solution enables various signalling systems to be integrated into a standardised cloud platform. Signaling X also opens up the interfaces of these systems for additional functionalities. It doesn't matter whether the signalling systems are used in high-speed, rapid transit or metro systems. However, they must come from Siemens Mobility. Signaling X enables ‘seamless control from a central Signaling Data Centre’, said André Rodenbeck, CEO Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, during the presentation of the solution yesterday in Berlin.
Siemens Mobility also presented enhancements for its Railigent X suite. For example, operators and maintenance personnel can now access their own applications and retrieve Railigent X data or algorithms via Application Programming Interface (APIs). This enables service tasks to be carried out even more efficiently than before, explained Elmar Zeiler, CEO Customer Services. The enhancements help to further automate measurements for wear, anomalies or faults in rail vehicles. In future, this should enable fully automated visual inspections. To this end, Siemens Mobility is working on a solution that will enable trains to be scanned by cameras before entering the depot and the images analysed using Artificial Intelligence (AI).
